Camouflage. A chameleon hides in plain view to devour unsuspecting prey, and to fool predators. Soldiers camouflage to kill and survive. Camouflaging is not about pretending out of inferiority. On the contrary, it is for serving one's true intentions, while not losing touch with one's inner self. Camouflaging is practical.
My art highlights how women camouflage themselves in a man's world with yet-to-become-true promise of equality. We paint ourselves. We decorate ourselves. We hurl sharp words like spears across cold marble desk in boardrooms. That's not really us, or maybe it is. Only we know. Because it is practical.
This series of paintings was developed as part of my work that I deal with gender issues. The subject matter – lingerie that are depicted with camouflage patterns that serve the purpose, also constructs a visual language that is contrasting and clashes with woman nature, which is soft and gentle. On the other hand, it illustrates the emotional conflict between the gentle and the tough.
